Cities of the Future

Study tour Evolve is the 2022 rendition of the international trip organized by Inter-Actief. These study tours are organized every other year, with previous instances traveling to Japan, Brazil, USA, China and many more. Evolve will be visiting Singapore, Taiwan and South-Korea in the fall of 2022. Here we will visit universities, companies and undertake cultural trips. Both these visits and the preparational courses will be focused on this years theme:

Cities of the Future

The world is getting smarter, not just our phones and laptops are becoming more powerful, but devices are getting more and more integrated into our surroundings. From smarter traffic management systems to large scale sensing networks, Cities of the Future will incorporate vastly more devices, of all different kinds. Ultimately with the goal of making our lives a little better day by day.

Singapore

Singapore is a small city state at the tip of the Malay Peninsula. It is home to a little under 6 million people, and with that, is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. While it once was a British trading post, it is now a wonderfully diverse country and has a booming trade-based economy.

The name Singapore comes from the Malay words “Singa” and “Pura” which together mean Lion City. Supposedly a 14th century prince saw an animal and was told it was a lion, this is however very unlikely as lions are not native to the Singapore area!

Taiwan

Taiwan is an island country off the coast of mainland China. Its sovereignty is currently disputed as China still claims to rule the island. Taiwan’s economy has an export-based industrial economy and produces many of the world’s computer chips. In general, Taiwan is very active in the technology industry and thus makes it a very attractive destination for our study tour!

Fun Fact: Taiwan was the first Asian country to legalize gay marriage back in May 2019!

South-Korea

South-Korea is a country with a population of 51 million people, half of which live in the Seoul Capital Area. It has developed greatly over the last 70 years and it now ranks 23rd on the Human Development Index. South-Korea’s main exports are electronics, machinery and motor vehicles, making it a perfect addition to our study tour.

South Korea is the world leader in internet connectivity. Approximately 92% of the country's population are internet users. They also boast the average fastest internet speed on the planet!
